Abdul Sami, 23, was sentenced on Friday 20th March after being found guilty of murdering his mother<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

A Bradford man who strangled his stepmother with her own headscarf has been jailed for life for her murder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abdul Sami, 23, of Mannheim Road, was sentenced on Friday 20th March 2026 at Bradford Crown Court after being found guilty of murdering Rizwana Kousar, 41, at the family home in Bradford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The court heard how Rizwana was found unconscious at the property on Kensington Road and was taken to hospital, where she died two days later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A post-mortem examination revealed she had suffered a fatal brain injury caused by lack of oxygen, after Sami strangled her using her own headscarf. The incident took place on on 15th August 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sami was convicted by a jury on 17th March and on Friday was sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 14 years and 91 days before he can be considered for release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a moving tribute, Rizwana\u2019s devastated family described her as a \u201ccherished daughter, sister, auntie, and friend\u201d whose \u201cheart was always full of love and selflessness\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They said: \u201cHer kindness and generosity left an indelible mark on everyone she touched, bringing warmth and joy into countless lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe void she has left is immeasurable, and our hearts are shattered by her absence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNothing can erase the profound pain and devastation that has engulfed our family. We hope only to seek justice for Rizwana.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Detective Chief Inspector Matt Holdsworth, of West Yorkshire Police\u2019s Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said: \u201cThis was a deeply tragic case, and our thoughts remain with the family, and everyone affected by Rizwana\u2019s death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis investigation has involved complex and technical investigation which has taken significant time to reach this point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe hope that this verdict brings some measure of comfort to those grieving and we will continue to support the family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
