{"id":9154,"date":"2026-02-19T11:59:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-19T11:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp26.cmswebdeveloper.com\/asian-news\/child-abuse-epidemic-spiralling-out-of-control-online\/"},"modified":"2026-02-19T11:59:00","modified_gmt":"2026-02-19T11:59:00","slug":"child-abuse-epidemic-spiralling-out-of-control-online","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp26.cmswebdeveloper.com\/asian-news\/child-abuse-epidemic-spiralling-out-of-control-online\/","title":{"rendered":"Child abuse epidemic \u2018spiralling out of control\u2019 online"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.asianexpress.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/800online-abuse-paedophile.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34417\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Police warn predators are exploiting AI, encrypted apps and social media to target children &#8211; as 1,000 suspects are arrested every month<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Britain\u2019s top policing leaders have issued a chilling warning: child sexual abuse is growing more severe, more complex and more accessible than ever before &#8211; fuelled by new technology and the explosion of online platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senior officers say offenders are now able to groom, exploit and abuse children with horrifying ease, as generative AI tools, livestreaming and end-to-end encrypted messaging create what they describe as a critical safeguarding crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The National Crime Agency (NCA) and police chiefs say the threat is no longer confined to the dark web.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, some of the most disturbing abuse material imaginable is being shared openly online, leaving children exposed in the very digital spaces where they learn, play and connect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rob Jones, Director General of Operations at the NCA, said officers are confronted daily with \u201cthe most obscene child abuse imaginable\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd this is not hidden,\u201d he warned. \u201cIt\u2019s being shared on social media\u2026 accessible on the clear web for anyone to see.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shocking new figures reveal the scale of the crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2024, the US National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children received more than 20 million reports of suspected online child sexual exploitation, with over 19 million linked to indecent images of children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That surge has driven an unprecedented flood of referrals into Britain, with the NCA now receiving around 1,700 reports every single week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police forces across the UK are arresting an average of 1,000 suspected offenders every month, safeguarding around 1,200 children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In just one week in January, 252 suspects were arrested, 118 were charged, and more than 400 children were protected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But officers say enforcement alone will never be enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The threat has diversified into new and terrifying forms: offenders commissioning live-streamed abuse \u201con demand\u201d for as little as \u00a320; the rise of financially motivated sexual extortion targeting young boys; and sadistic online \u201cnetworks\u201d where members compete to share increasingly extreme material.<br>Police warn there is also growing evidence linking online abuse imagery to real-world contact offending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Temporary Chief Constable Becky Riggs said: \u201cEvery child deserves to feel safe\u2026 including online spaces. But education, prevention and partnership are just as essential.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NCA is urging tougher action against tech firms through the Online Safety Act, demanding platforms be made hostile environments for predators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis cannot be policing alone,\u201d Mr Jones said. \u201cWe all owe it to our children not to be bystanders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">MONSTERS BEHIND BARS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Patrick Howlett <\/strong>(58), Kent &#8211; Sent almost \u00a356,000 to the Philippines to pay for live-streamed child sexual abuse. <strong>Jailed for 30 years<\/strong> last year and handed an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order, with a judge condemning his \u201cbreath-taking lack of regard for childhood\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Edward Gratwick<\/strong> (68), Mitcham, London &#8211; Arrested at Stansted Airport as he tried to fly to Romania to abuse children as young as six. <strong>Jailed for life<\/strong> in January 2026, with a minimum of 19 years, after plotting to drug a child victim.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Robert Chown<\/strong> &#8211; <strong>Sentenced to 25 years<\/strong> in October 2025 after pleading guilty to 41 offences, including making and distributing indecent images and forcing a child into sexual activity. Prosecuted through major international work with the FBI and Europol.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Jonathan Leonard<\/strong> and <strong>Ann Bray<\/strong>, South Wales &#8211; The couple were charged with 32 child sexual offences, including penetration and sharing indecent images.
