Ahmed, 21, gears up to take on the world at the \u2018Skills Olympics\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.asianexpress.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1.-Ahmed-Shakir-Bradford-College-Joinery-WorldSkills-2026-credit-WorldSkills-UK_25-633x1024.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-51900\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.75;object-fit:cover;width:626px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ahmed Shakir earns spot in elite Squad UK after stunning win at SkillBuild finals (credit: WorldSkills UK)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A talented young joiner from Bradford is getting ready to take on the world after being handpicked for Squad UK &#8211; the national team training for WorldSkills 2026, the global showdown dubbed the \u201cSkills Olympics.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ahmed Shakir, 21, who works for local firm Abrahams &amp; Carlisle and studies at Bradford College, has already proved he\u2019s one of Britain\u2019s brightest young tradesmen after a dazzling performance at this year\u2019s \u2018SkillBuild\u2019 competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, he&#8217;s preparing to swap Yorkshire for Shanghai, where the world\u2019s top apprentices and students will battle it out in front of 250,000 spectators in the biggest vocational skills competition on the planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.asianexpress.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/4.-WorldSkills-Competition-credit-WorldSkills-UK_25-1024x728.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-51904\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m over the moon,\u201d Ahmed said. \u201cThis is a once-in-a-lifetime chance. The training will be tough, but I\u2019m going to give it everything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ahmed is one of just four joinery apprentices selected for the UK squad and will now undergo 18-months of intense training, guided by industry experts and former champions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WorldSkills 2026 will see 1,500 competitors from more than 80 countries go head-to-head in 30+ skills ranging from digital tech and engineering to construction and hospitality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAfter proving himself as one of the country\u2019s best young joiners, Ahmed will now get the chance to do it all over again- this time on a global scale,\u201d said Ben Blackledge, CEO of WorldSkills UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is about excellence, ambition, and showing what British talent can achieve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.asianexpress.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/2.-Ahmed-Shakir-in-Abrahams-Carlisle-Workshop-1024x683.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-51902\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ahmed\u2019s journey started just three years ago, when he joined Bradford College\u2019s joinery course. He completed his Level 1 and 2 qualifications before landing an apprenticeship with Abrahams &amp; Carlisle in 2023. Since then, he hasn\u2019t looked back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey\u2019ve been amazing,\u201d Ahmed said. \u201cThey helped me prepare for SkillBuild, even took my tools all the way to Milton Keynes.
