{"id":8645,"date":"2024-10-08T13:06:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-08T13:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp26.cmswebdeveloper.com\/asian-news\/brother-and-sister-duo-convicted-over-stealing-money-from-their-own-charity\/"},"modified":"2024-10-08T13:06:00","modified_gmt":"2024-10-08T13:06:00","slug":"brother-and-sister-duo-convicted-over-stealing-money-from-their-own-charity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp26.cmswebdeveloper.com\/asian-news\/brother-and-sister-duo-convicted-over-stealing-money-from-their-own-charity\/","title":{"rendered":"Brother and sister duo convicted over stealing money from their own charity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.asianexpress.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/brother-and-sister-duo_24-jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-50836\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Birmingham brother and sister have today been found guilty of fraud offences relating to donated charitable funds.\u2028\u2028<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rajbinder Kaur, 55, was convicted for money laundering and six counts of theft amounting to \u00a350,000 and one count under Section 60 of the Charities Act 2011 &#8211; knowingly or recklessly provide false or misleading information to the Charity Commission.\u2028\u2028<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her brother Kaldip Singh Lehal, 43, was also convicted for knowingly or recklessly providing false or misleading information to the Charity Commission. \u2028\u2028<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pair, both formally of Hamstead Road, were initially arrested in July 2019 and subsequently charged in September 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2028The trial at Birmingham Crown Court heard how Kaur and Lehal ran an organisation called Sikh Youth UK (SYUK) which was formed in 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An application was made in 2016 to the Charity Commission for SYUK to become a registered charity but when the commission asked for further information about SYUK, the information was not given so the charity application was closed.\u2028\u2028<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SYUK received countless donations during fundraising events including a sponsored winter sleep out and a football tournament both in 2018.\u2028\u2028<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kaur \u2013 a former bank worker &#8211; would transfer funds from the SYUK bank to her own account and then pay off her personal debts and loans as well as sending money to others including family members.\u2028\u2028Kaur had over 50 personal bank accounts in an attempt to make it as complicated as possible to follow the flow of stolen money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Superintendent Annie Miller, from West Midlands Police, said: \u201cKaur tried to portray herself as someone na\u00efve about financial matters despite having worked in a bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSYUK was clearly a means to fund her lifestyle and pay her debts off, but in the simplest of terms Kaur was stealing large amounts of money that had been donated by local people for good causes.\u201d\u2028\u2028<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Supt Miller continued: \u201cThis has been a very long and complex investigation into fraud, and we have worked closely with the Charity Commission to bring this pair to justice.\u201d\u2028\u2028Kaur and Lehal will be sentenced on 21 November.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Birmingham brother and sister have today been found guilty of fraud offences relating to donated charitable funds.\u2028\u2028 Rajbinder Kaur, 55, was convicted for money laundering and six counts of theft amounting to \u00a350,000 and one count under Section 60 of the Charities Act 2011 &#8211; knowingly or recklessly provide false or misleading information to [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":2409,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"inline_featured_image":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[74],"tags":[148,3811,3812,78,81,65,82,3813,3814,86],"class_list":["post-8645","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-news","tag-birmingham","tag-brother-and-sister-stole-from-charity","tag-kaldip-singh-lehal","tag-lancashire","tag-manchester","tag-midlands","tag-national","tag-rajbinder-kaur","tag-sikh-youth-uk","tag-yorkshire"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.8 -
