Bush Theatre has announced that the run of Waleed Akhtar\u2019s play The Real Ones<\/em><\/strong> will be extended to 26 October<\/strong> due to ticket demand.\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong>A funny and honest love letter to platonic soulmates, this world premiere production reunites the team behind the Olivier Award-winning sensation, The P Word<\/em>, writer Waleed Akhtar,<\/strong> and director Anthony Simpson-Pike<\/strong>.\u00a0 The cast is Nathaniel Curtis <\/strong>(It\u2019s a Sin<\/em>, Channel 4), Nnabiko Ejimofor<\/strong>, Mariam Haque<\/strong> (When Winston Went To War With The Wireless<\/em>, Donmar Warehouse) and Anthony Howell <\/strong>(A Thousand Blows<\/em>, Disney+).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI love you. Like genuinely I love you. You\u2019re a real one.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bBest friends Zaid and Neelam shared a dream: get away, make it as playwrights, and build a future where they’re free to be themselves. Together, always. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bYears later, things are far from what they expected. Zaid\u2019s life has kinda stalled, half out of the closet, living at home, and still chasing the dream. While Neelam has taken a completely different path, as she chooses to prioritise her own happiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bAs their lives pull further apart and a mess of things left unsaid hangs between them, it becomes less and less clear if they\u2019ll ever find a way back to each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Waleed Akhtar<\/strong> is a writer and actor. He was the recipient of the 2023 Peggy Ramsay\/Film 4 bursary and was awarded an MGC Futures bursary winner in 2021. He won \u2018Most Promising Playwright\u2019 at The Offies 2023 and was nominated for the equivalent at The Evening Standard Awards. His play, The P Word<\/em> won the \u2018Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre\u2019 at the 2023 Olivier Awards, alongside a nomination for \u2018Best Play\u2019 at the WGGB Awards in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Work for theatre includes: The P Word<\/em> (Bush Theatre); Kabul Goes Pop: Music Television Afghanistan<\/em> (Brixton House, Mercury Theatre, & HighTide); Sholay on the Big Screen<\/em> (Off Stage Theatre, Bush & Nubian Life); I Don\u2019t Know What To Do<\/em> (co-creator \u2013 Vault Festival). His translation work includes Alexis Michalik\u2019s The Art of Illusion<\/em> (Hampstead Theatre); Famalam<\/em> (Season 4 contributor); Sketchtopia and Newsjack<\/em> (BBC Radio 4 \u2013 Contributor); Lost Paradise<\/em> (Short film B3 Media\/UK Film Council). He is currently under commission at the Almeida Theatre & Unicorn Theatre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Work for television includes: The Road Trip<\/em> (Paramount+\/42MP) and a television adaptation of his hit play The P Word<\/em> (House Productions). He is a current participant of the BBC Studios Spotlight scheme developing an original drama with Sid Gentle Films. His original audio play Mrs Bibi<\/em> will be released by Audible in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As an actor his credits include Cruella, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen<\/em> and The Great<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anthony Simpson-Pike<\/strong> is a director, dramaturg and writer. He was Deputy Artistic Director at the Yard Theatre, Resident Director at Theatre Peckham and Associate Director at the Gate Theatre. Recent directorial work includes Samuel Takes a Break\u2026<\/em> at The Yard Theatre, Beautiful Thing<\/em> at Stratford East, Grenfell: In the Words of Survivors<\/em> at the National Theatre (which transferred to St Ann\u2019s Warehouse in New York in April 2024), and, at the Bush, Olivier Award-winning The P Word<\/em> and Lava<\/em> (nominated for \u2018Best Director\u2019 at the Black British Theatre Awards); and An Octoroon <\/em>at the Abbey, Dublin (nominated for \u2018Best Production\u2019 at the Irish Times Theatre Awards).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recent dramaturgical credits include Now, I See<\/em> at Stratford East, Much Ado About Nothing<\/em> for the RSC; Samskara<\/em> at the Yard Theatre; Hotline<\/em> with Produced Moon at the Tron; Dear Young Monster<\/em> by Pete McHale for The Queer House; and Coup de Grace<\/em> at the Royal Court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nathaniel Curtis<\/strong> plays Zaid. He is best known for his breakout role of Ash Mukherjee in Russell T Davies\u2019 powerful Channel 4 series, It\u2019s A Sin<\/em>. Nathaniel\u2019s theatre credits Include 2:22: A Ghost Story<\/em> (UK Tour) Disruption<\/em> (Park Theatre), Romeo and Juliet<\/em> (UK Tour), The Tempest <\/em>(UK Tour) and Pride and Prejudice <\/em>(Regent\u2019s Park Open Air Theatre). On television he has appeared as Br\u00edan in The Witcher: Blood Origin (<\/em>Netflix), <\/em>Dolph Laserhawk in Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix (<\/em>Netflix) and Isaac Newton in Doctor Who<\/em> (BBC). His audio credits include: Torchwood \u2013 Cuckoo<\/em> (Big Finish) and Auris<\/em> (Audible).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nnabiko Ejomofor<\/strong> plays Deji. Nnabiko trained at RADA and received an Olivier Award Nomination for \u2018Best Supporting Actor\u2019 for his performance in For Black Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When The Hue Gets Too Heavy, <\/em>and he won the 2022 Stage Debut Award for \u2018Best Performer in a Play\u2019. Recent credits include: Now, I See<\/em> (Stratford East); Jitney<\/em> (Old Vic \/ Headlong); For Black Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When The Hue Gets Too Heavy<\/em> (West End \/ Royal Court \/ New Diorama). Radio includes: Sarah Walker\u2019s Sunday Morning Show<\/em>. Short film credits include: Good Vibes Only <\/em>and Figure<\/em>. Nnabiko has previously been a dancer for Boy Blue Entertainment and won the Lilian Baylis Award.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mariam Haque<\/strong> plays Neelam.
