This timely and evocative play is brought sharply into focus in 2023 and offers a fresh perspective on Britain\u2019s relationship with its imperial past and how it continues to shape the country\u2019s identity today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"-KY2Jz67MRw\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Empress (2023) | Trailer\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-KY2Jz67MRw?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>The Empress <\/em><\/strong>is now running in the Swan Theatre until Friday 15 September 2023 before transferring to the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre in London from Wednesday 4 October to Saturday 28 October. The production will then return to the Swan Theatre from Wednesday 1 November to Saturday 18 November 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Erica Whyman<\/strong>, RSC Acting Artistic Director said: <em>\u201cThe RSC has always believed it essential to support and celebrate the living writers who can expose new ways of seeing our collective history and conjure a brave new world that we don\u2019t yet understand. The Empress by Tanika Gupta \u2013 now on the GCSE syllabus &#8211; presents an extraordinary friendship and a beautiful love story, whilst forensically exposing the blithe injustice of empire.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><u>THE EMPRESS<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Set in 1887, the year of Queen Victoria\u2019s Golden Jubilee, the play tells the story of the sixteen-year-old Rani Das, ayah (nursemaid) to an English family, who arrives at Tilbury docks after a long voyage from India, to start a new life in Britain. On the boat, Rani befriends a lascar (sailor), an Indian politician and a royal servant destined to serve the Queen. Full of hopes and dreams of what lies ahead, they each&nbsp;embark on an extraordinary journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spanning a period of 13 years over the \u2018Golden Era\u2019 of Empire, this epic drama takes audiences from the rugged gangways of Tilbury docks to the grandeur of Queen Victoria\u2019s Palace, whilst unveiling the long and embedded culture of British Asian history which continues to shape our society today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Making her RSC debut, <strong>Tanya Katyal<\/strong> plays Rani Das. Her theatre credits include <em>When Mountains Meet <\/em>at Cottiers Theatre, Glasgow. Television credits include Netflix\u2019s <em>Eternally Confused and Eager for Love.<\/em><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Raj Bajaj <\/strong>plays Abdul Karim. Raj\u2019s previous RSC credits include <em>Tamburlaine, Tartuffe and Much Ado About Nothing. <\/em>Other recent theatre credits include <em>Wildfire Road<\/em> (Sheffield Crucible), <em>Tartuffe<\/em> (Birmingham Rep), <em>Hobson&#8217;s Choice<\/em> (Royal Exchange Manchester), <em>Rapunzel<\/em> (Stratford East), <em>Lions &amp; Tigers, The Merchant of Venice<\/em> (Shakespeare\u2019s Globe), <em>East is East<\/em> (Northern Stage\/Nottingham Playhouse) and <em>Bend It Like Beckham<\/em> (Phoenix Theatre).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Alexandra Gilbreath&nbsp;<\/strong>plays Queen Victoria. The text was introduced by AQA in 2022, the largest examination board in England. Tanika\u2019s 2019 production of&nbsp;<em>A Doll\u2019s House<\/em>&nbsp;was previously added to the national curriculum by Pearson in 2021 alongside works by Bola Agbaje, In-Sook Chappell and Roy Williams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tanika Gupta<\/strong> has written over 25 stage plays that have been produced in major theatres across the UK. Her critically acclaimed adaptation of Ibsen\u2019s <em>A Doll\u2019s House<\/em> set in colonial Calcutta launched Rachel O\u2019Riordan\u2019s first season as Artistic Director of the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tanika was awarded an MBE for Services to Drama and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. Tanika is an Artistic Associate at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre and was recently announced as one of two new Writers in Residence at The Bush Theatre in 2023.
