Her most-recent operation took 13-hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now her mum, Attika, is asking for life-saving donations over Ramadan towards Children\u2019s Heart Surgery Fund (CHSF).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She hopes her daughter Sawda\u2019s story, will inspire Asian Express readers to help fund the Leeds Congenital Heart Unit (LCHU) &#8211; which CHSF has supported for well over 30 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The LCHU has a world-class reputation and helps local babies born with heart disease, almost one-fifth of which are from the South Asian population. One of those was young Sawda who is now six-years old. Her mum Attika says she is \u201cforever grateful\u201d for the charity and Unit\u2019s support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attika was 16-weeks pregnant when she found out that Sawda would be born with congenital heart disease (CHD). She had multiple heart defects including Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her daughter\u2019s heart condition was too complicated to be corrected fully, and Sawda had open heart surgery in Leeds at just 11-days old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.asianexpress.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/sawda-10-days-old_22-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"44515\" data-link=\"https:\/\/www.asianexpress.co.uk\/?attachment_id=44515\" class=\"wp-image-44515\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.asianexpress.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/sawda-scar_22-1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"44526\" data-full-url=\"https:\/\/www.asianexpress.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/sawda-scar_22-1.jpg\" data-link=\"https:\/\/www.asianexpress.co.uk\/?attachment_id=44526\" class=\"wp-image-44526\"\/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><figcaption class=\"blocks-gallery-caption\">Mum Attika didn\u2019t know if her new-born Sawda would survive her first operation<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attika said: \u201cWe were told to hope for the best. The surgeon who performed her operation said they didn\u2019t know how she made it out from theatre alive. They thought they would be coming out with bad news.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One day after her surgery, Sawda was off the ventilator and the procedure had started to show it was working. Her oxygen levels increased, up to 90%, and Sawda went home just 14 days after surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She was subsequently seen regularly by the Leeds Congenital Heart Unit, and had many ups and downs in that period including more heart surgery in 2016. It was decided Sawda needed surgery yet again in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c9th September 2021 was the day Sawda was going to be operated on once again,\u201d Attika recalls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe waited for 13 hours to find out if she was going to make it. She did make it, and I was hoping and praying that this surgery would give her a good chance at life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sawda went back to school in November. Mum says: \u201cShe\u2019s now really excited to be able to participate in classes like PE and she\u2019s the happiest I\u2019ve ever seen her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-3 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.asianexpress.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/sawda-23-Mr-Jaber-hero_22-556x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"44517\" data-full-url=\"https:\/\/www.asianexpress.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/sawda-23-Mr-Jaber-hero_22.jpeg\" data-link=\"https:\/\/www.asianexpress.co.uk\/?attachment_id=44517\" class=\"wp-image-44517\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.asianexpress.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/sawda-recovering-slowly-2_22-551x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"44518\" data-full-url=\"https:\/\/www.asianexpress.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/sawda-recovering-slowly-2_22.jpeg\" data-link=\"https:\/\/www.asianexpress.co.uk\/?attachment_id=44518\" class=\"wp-image-44518\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.asianexpress.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/sawda22-world-book-day-2_22-556x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"44521\" data-full-url=\"https:\/\/www.asianexpress.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/sawda22-world-book-day-2_22.jpeg\" data-link=\"https:\/\/www.asianexpress.co.uk\/?attachment_id=44521\" class=\"wp-image-44521\"\/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><figcaption class=\"blocks-gallery-caption\">Sawda used to hate going to school in a pram, and now joyfully walks to school<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs she got breathless so easily, she used to hate going to school in a pram, but she walks to school now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe will need more surgery in various stages of her life, but none like the surgery she had last year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Donations this Ramadan could help save other children like Sawda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CHSF provides life-saving medical equipment for the hospital, and also pays for heart monitoring kits which can used once the patient has been discharged. It is funded purely through public donations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The charity also focuses on providing parent accommodation and family care, to help support mums and dads who are coming to terms with their child\u2019s diagnosis:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCHSF told me they had accommodation in the hospital that I could use because I lived far away, and my daughter would have to stay a while in the hospital. The accommodation was a great help &#8211; especially during the days she was critical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWelcomes Packs are a sweet gesture from CHSF, especially when you come to hospital in a hurry, and you don\u2019t bring much with you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CHSF also provides a dedicated family support worker, Sarah Cherry, and Attika adds: \u201cSarah really helped me cope when I was told Sawda wasn\u2019t going to make it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe just listened when I was at my lowest. If I didn\u2019t have Sarah that day, I don\u2019t know what I would have done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are forever grateful for every person we have met through this journey.
