{"id":7734,"date":"2022-03-02T13:35:00","date_gmt":"2022-03-02T13:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp26.cmswebdeveloper.com\/asian-news\/rise-like-a-phoenix-sports-science-graduates-womens-club-goes-from-strength-to-strength\/"},"modified":"2022-03-02T13:35:00","modified_gmt":"2022-03-02T13:35:00","slug":"rise-like-a-phoenix-sports-science-graduates-womens-club-goes-from-strength-to-strength","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp26.cmswebdeveloper.com\/asian-news\/rise-like-a-phoenix-sports-science-graduates-womens-club-goes-from-strength-to-strength\/","title":{"rendered":"Rise like a phoenix: Sports science graduate&#8217;s women\u2019s club goes from strength to strength"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">By: Andrew Vaux<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-white-color has-black-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">ABOVE: (library pic) Harleen Kaur claimed British kickboxing gold in 2015, after which she won a World Martial Kombat Federation (WMKF) silver medal on her World Championship debut becoming the first British Asian female to represent Team England in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cThere were people who constantly tried to put me down and belittle what I was doing\u2026\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Harleen Kaur is certainly a woman with a mission \u2013 to fight for gender equality and promote the involvement of females in sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And whatever challenges she faces, her strong will and determination always see her through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Embracing the ethos of local chart-topping band Chumbawamba, Harleen might get knocked down \u2013 but she always gets back up again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The former martial arts champion from Bradford has overcome opposition from members of the local community, funding challenges and lack of venues to build a successful organisation allowing people across the Bradford district to enjoy a healthier lifestyle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Harleen encouraged a small group of friends to get together in a local park during lockdown, which led her to launch Club Ekta, and is excited about its continued growth in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.asianexpress.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Club-Ekta-1_22-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44195\" width=\"726\" height=\"544\"\/><figcaption>Members of Club Ekta<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Club Ekta CIC enhances the social, physical and mental wellbeing of women and children using the power of sport \u2013 whilst focussing on gender equality and promoting women in sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\"><strong>But it hasn\u2019t been without its barriers and challenges along the way.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Harleen explains: \u201cI\u2019ve always recognised the importance of sport and exercise in helping people with their social, physical and mental wellbeing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Obviously, the Covid lockdowns were extremely challenging for us all and many people suffered emotionally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs soon as restrictions were lifted, and we could gradually get out and meet people again, I gathered a group of friends together for a football \u2018kick-about\u2019 and a game of rounders on the local recreation field in BD5 a couple of times a week.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a degree in Sports Science, and a dedicated passion for sport and physical exercise, Harleen focused her attention on launching Club Ekta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.asianexpress.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/harleen-kaur-2_22-1024x575.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44197\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She says: \u201cIt seemed such a good idea and something which would really benefit the local community, but I couldn\u2019t understand the challenges I soon started to face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-black-background-color has-text-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThere were people who constantly tried to put me down and belittle what I was doing. I just don\u2019t know what their problem was.<\/strong>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhether they were envious of my previous sporting success, or just couldn\u2019t understand that someone was showing the drive and commitment to do something positive for the local community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are still some critics today, but I don\u2019t let them get me down and, if anything, their behaviour just inspires and motives me further.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She continues: \u201cI immediately realised I\u2019d need to attract funding. Not surprisingly, this proved difficult at first. However, despite the setbacks, I never gave up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSmall pots of funding gradually came in, and I have to thank Bradford Council who have been extremely supportive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe next thing to do was to find premises \u2013 somewhere warm and out of the wind and rain we experienced in the park! I gradually found Bradford Academy, Manningham Sports Centre and The Climbing Hub and I\u2019m extremely grateful to all these venues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So, what does the future hold for the group?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.asianexpress.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/harleen-kaur-kicking-800x532.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26551\" width=\"726\" height=\"482\"\/><figcaption>Harleen became interested in martial arts at the age of eight when she started karate, winning the national championships in 2013 and 2014.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Harleen explains: \u201cWe want to shatter the stereotypical perception of a private members\u2019 club which people see as very stuffy and only open to people who can afford it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We\u2019re building community cohesion and reducing isolation and want to cover as many areas of Bradford as possible and make it accessible for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe support each other outside the sport sessions and have turned into a big family. We organise walks, social events and trips with each other and it\u2019s amazing to see what can happen when women empower each other.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Harleen became interested in martial arts at the age of eight when she started karate, winning the national championships in 2013 and 2014.
