Bahrawar Zaidan Ahmad has added something extraordinary to that list: representing the children of Leeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Year 6 pupil from Dixons Trinity Chapeltown has been elected Leeds Children\u2019s Mayor for 2026\u20132027, following a city-wide election in which more than 7,000 young people voted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His name was announced at Leeds Civic Hall on Tuesday 13th October, ending months of campaigning and starting a year he hopes will make a real difference to other children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.asianexpress.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Bahrawar-Zaidan-Ahmad-3_26-1024x711.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-54390\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the heart of Bahrawar\u2019s campaign is something he feels strongly about: children\u2019s mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He wants young people to know that feeling worried, anxious or overwhelmed is nothing to be ashamed of and that asking for help should never feel difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI feel incredibly honoured to have been elected as the next Leeds Children\u2019s Mayor and I am truly grateful to everyone who believed in me and supported my campaign,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMental health is something I care deeply about because no child should ever feel that they have to face their worries alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI want to help make it easier for young people to find support, speak openly about how they feel and know that there is always someone willing to listen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FROM A SCHOOL IDEA TO CITY HALL<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bahrawar\u2019s journey began when he came across the Leeds Children\u2019s Mayor competition and decided on his own to give it a go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He researched what was involved, put together his manifesto and gave it to his headteacher, Mrs Watson, to submit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What started as an idea from a determined schoolboy has now taken him all the way to Civic Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.asianexpress.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Bahrawar-Zaidan-Ahmad-4_26-1024x774.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-54391\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His interest in helping others runs through the family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His grandfather, Haji Riaz Ahmad, devoted many years to supporting people in his community, and that spirit of giving back has continued through the generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This family influence has shaped Bahrawar\u2019s belief that, even at ten years old, he can do something worthwhile for others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And he certainly has some ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His manifesto includes a website bringing together mental health services for children across Leeds, so young people and their families can find help more easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also wants schools to have trained pupil wellbeing ambassadors &#8211; children who can look out for classmates, offer a friendly ear and encourage anyone struggling to speak to someone who can help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His third proposal is a city-wide \u2018Your Mind Matters Day\u2019 giving pupils time away from school pressures to enjoy sport, music, art and activities that help them feel good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They\u2019re ambitious ideas, but Bahrawar hopes to work with the Leeds Children\u2019s Mayor team to make them a reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A PROUD MOMENT FOR THE FAMILY<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In a remarkable family double, Bahrawar is following in the footsteps of his older sister, Wania Ahmad, who was elected Leeds Children\u2019s Mayor in 2019 &#8211; making it two young mayors from the same family, seven years apart!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.asianexpress.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/wania-ahmed-with-the-lord-mayor-leeds-childrens-mayor-2019_23-jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48640\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Bahrawar&#8217;s elder sister, Wania Ahmad, was elected Leeds Children\u2019s Mayor in 2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Away from his new civic responsibilities, Bahrawar is still a regular ten-year-old who enjoys rugby, boxing and spending time with his friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the excitement of winning, he hasn\u2019t forgotten the people who helped him get there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He has thanked his school and headteacher for encouraging him, along with the schools, youth groups and individuals who supported his campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His family have been there every step of the way.
